The Birth of Own Your Voice
As a child, I was always shy and an introvert. I grew up with a mom who gave me the greatest gift I could ever receive. She was determined to teach me about my inner voice and to always follow it because she knew if I did that, I would always be good in life. She taught me what it was, how to listen to it, and most importantly how to follow it. I also grew up with a father who taught me how to use my voice! He taught me the importance of standing up for myself, for not taking shit from anyone, and how to fight for what I want. They didn’t know it, but their teachings were happily married in my heart and soul and have become the foundation for who I am today. I have never regretted any decision I made from the basis of listening to and following my inner voice. Even if it caused me trouble with others, the decision always turned out to be the best for me and led me down a path of joy, calm, and self-love.
However, we don’t live in a perfect world and I got swooped up into life: society’s expectations, mixed messages, and trauma experiences. I have survived two loved ones dying by suicide and I am an infertility warrior. At age 36, after surviving I found myself so far gone from myself that when I looked in the mirror, I didn’t know who I was. I had completely lost myself and I didn’t like that feeling. I felt like I was sitting in a pile of pieces of my soul and I knew something had to change. The hardest thing for me was that I had completely lost my inner voice; that little drum that beat inside me, that inner guidance system that told me what was right/wrong FOR ME. I had no idea how I lost it or how to find it again, but I was determined to get back to it.
And so, my journey began. I spent time in therapy. I did a lot of reading. I did a ton of healing. I reconnected with my ride or die crew. And slowly I heard that inner voice come back. Slowly it got louder and stronger. Eventually, it grew to a movement that I couldn’t stop. It rolled around in my head and grew in my heart. And so, Own Your Voice was born because I don’t want anyone to lose that deep part of them that will always guide them in the right direction. Starting this journey both scares me and excites me all at the same time. But I’ve learned that if your dreams don’t make you want to throw up while doing the excited dance, they aren’t the right size for you! If your dreams just make you want to throw up, they aren’t the right size for you. If your dreams make you want to skip down the road while pushing the easy button, they aren’t the right size for you. Your dreams should make you want to dance and throw up simultaneously because they should excite you while pushing you beyond your limits! That’s how you know your dreams are the right size for you!
And Own Your Voice is the right size for me. I’ve always said that I want to leave this world better than I found it. I am sharing my story and connecting with each of you so that you know it is possible to walk this journey and make it to the other side. Silence is a killer. It kills dreams, it kills healing, it kills connection. Most importantly, it kills our inner voice. When we know that someone else in this world doesn’t just understand it, but they get it, it feels like anything is possible. Own Your Voice will allow me to connect, inspire, and guide you to find, follow, and always listen to your inner voice. I acknowledge that this is my journey. You may connect with it. You may not. And that is ok. This is me, writing my story, hoping it helps someone.
